Optus 3G mobile network crippled
OPTUS 3G customers in Melbourne and Sydney have not been able to use their mobile phones since this morning.
One Optus 3G customer, based in Sydney, said each time she tried making a call, "connection error" would be displayed on her phone.
Another customer in Milson's Point reported similar symptoms, saying that although their handset indicated a 3G signal was available they were unable to make and receive calls, nor could they access the internet.
An Optus spokeswoman confirmed the carrier’s 3G network was experiencing problems but was unable to pinpoint the root cause.
"Our 3G data services in Sydney and Melbourne are currently affected by an unknown problem," she said.
The spokeswoman said Optus customers in Melbourne have been without 3G data services since about 10am AEST.
Voice calls for 3G customers have also been affected by the outage but have since been re-routed over the carrier’s GSM network, she said.
Optus customers in Sydney have been receiving intermittent reception since about 1pm.
